The Role of Routines

A routine you trust is a reset button. It clears your head and leaves you with one job: hit the shot.

One of the best lessons I have learned, and one I insist my students take to heart, is the value of a pre-shot routine. Aggression, frustration, distraction and hesitation will always be part of golf. A routine is how you stop them deciding your round.

What a routine gives you

Consistency

A repeatable process means the same steady approach to every shot.

Focus

It narrows your attention to the task and blocks out the noise.

Confidence

A well practised routine builds trust in your ability to execute.

My five step routine

This works well for drives and fairway shots. Tailor it to your style, then keep it the same every time.

  1. Visualise the shot. Picture the flight, the trajectory and where it lands. See success before you swing.
  2. Choose a target. Pick a specific spot, such as a tree branch or a patch of fairway. Aiming small improves accuracy.
  3. Check your setup. Grip, stance, posture, alignment. Do not rush this. A solid setup underpins every good shot.
  4. Take a practice swing. Make it about feel and rhythm, not mechanics.
  5. Commit and swing. Step in, take a breath, and swing with confidence. No second guessing.

Lessons from my students

Julie came to me frustrated with her short game. She had the skills but kept chunking chips on the course. Watching her, I saw she was rushing her setup. We built a simple routine of visualise, check setup, smooth swing. She rang me after her next round, delighted that she had chipped brilliantly by sticking to it.

Tony was slicing his drives because he was trying to hit the ball too hard, which wrecked his balance and tempo. We calmed things down with a pre-shot routine and trust in his natural motion. His drives did not only straighten out. They went further.

Julie and Tony did not need new clubs. They needed a routine they trusted.

Why routines work

Routines are not only about mechanics, they are about mental discipline. A consistent process removes the noise in your head. You stop carrying the last hole or the people around you, and you play the present shot. That clarity brings better execution and, in the end, more enjoyment.

Even the best players have off days. What sets them apart is their ability to reset and refocus.Golf is a journey of improvement

So next time you are struggling, take a deep breath, return to your routine and trust your preparation. You may be surprised how quickly your round turns around.
